Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a syndrome characterized by pain or discomfort seemingly originating from contact of the back of the kneecap with the thigh bone. It is a frequently encountered diagnosis in physiotherapy clinic. It is a combination of problems such as maltracking of knee cap and arthritis changes along with muscle weakness and muscle tightness.

Main Symptoms

Prolonged repetitive forces (running or jumping) can result in thinning and softening of the articular cartilage under the patella. Driving, climbing stairs, walking up a slope can be particularly painful.

Management

Physiotherapy could help in such knee pain mainly by taping, myotherapy, trigger point therapy, muscle stretches and strengthening exercises.
